Our Story

Located in Graystone Plaza, this is the Newport Family Restaurant

When Maria and her husband Sam opened the Newport Family Restaurant in 1982 their goal was to provide wholesome, flavorful meals for the working family. Times may have changed, but not the quality and value of the food. Come in with your family and friends. Enjoy a meal cooked to order with a reasonable price to match. Order one of Maria’s weekly specials- but come in early, they don’t last long!

Over the years a loyal following of regulars has developed. We love serving them every day! But we’re also honored to have occasional VIP visits. Senators, governors, Vice President Biden and his wife, and even singing legend Johnny Mathis have all dined in the restaurant!

Maria makes homemade crab cakes, cole slaw, potato salad, chili (which is the best ever), rice pudding, and much more! Have some fresh salsa with your omelet. While breakfast is one of our favored meals (it’s served all day) there’s a wide variety of homecooked entrees to satisfy almost any appetite.

Meet Maria

Maria grew up poor in a small town in Italy called Pisterzo. Her father died when she was 7, having her to take care of her mother and her younger brother. When Maria was 17 she moved to Toronto, Canada with her family to create a better life. Then she met her husband Sam, a waiter who also was an immigrant from Greece. Both came from humble beginnings in their countries and immigrated to North America for a better way of life. After the birth of her daughter, Petula, they moved to America to experience the American Dream. They found themselves in Wilmington, Delaware, and in 1982 they opened the Newport Family Restaurant. Sam passed away in 1987 and Maria has been running the restaurant independently ever since.

Maria Perdikis, owner of Newport Family Restaurant, and Petula Perdikis, daughter of Maria Perdikis.

“If you work hard, you can achieve anything, I have a house. I have a family. I have the restaurant. I have everything. And I never took a penny from the government. I worked two, three jobs. I am proud of myself to be who I am today.”

- Maria Perdikis, The Italian Herald
